Mine come to me from ancestors living and dead, the food I cook and eat, my body and sexuality, my grief and politics, Jewish lineage and the Mexico where I now live. Because my thinking moves fluidly between English and untranslated Spanish and Yiddish, the poems do too. My work refrains from attempting clean resolutions for the embedded contradictions between any of these facets. The poems reflect a Jew who mourns Israel’s genocide in Gaza and her conservative-leaning father in the same breath; an adult daughter who refuses her family’s fears but sometimes picks them back up in different guises; a life split between New York City and a mountain town where roosters keep better time than clocks. Through it all, humor shows up, irrepressible. My dear friend, the writer Gina Srmabekian, recounts a saying from her Armenian heritage: “Sit straight, talk crooked.” If poems had posture, mine would have this one. Alice Walker’s writings on diaspora and bell hooks’ writings on radically honest love have seeped into my writing.
